Trainee Engagement Committee Update

Happy New Year! 2026 is upon us.  This is a great time to look back on all that we accomplished in 2025 and look forward to 2026.  We continue to see the success of our Neuroanesthesia Advanced Classroom and Basic Classroom.  This great resource is available to share with your trainees while on their Neurosurgical Anesthesia rotations. As a reminder, this is largely a free resource to help guide junior and senior residents through their Neurosurgical Anesthesia rotations.  It can be found within the Education Corner tab under Education and Trainees (https://snacc.org/snacc-advanced-neuroanesthesia-classroom/).

Our EEG education corner article this month is quite fascinating.  Dr.Maria Solorzano reviews EEG maturation in the pediatric population.  As adult Neurosurgical Anesthesiologists, we were unaware of the changes that occur in the pediatric brain and how this is interpreted with EEG readings.  We were also intrigued by how little we know about EEG under the age of one.  This review is truly eye-opening, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did.  As always, feel free to reach out to the authors or the TEC directors with any questions or comments.

We continue to produce new educational podcasts. The JNA Podcast, focused on featured articles in the JNA, continues to be spearheaded by Dr. Shobana Rajan.  Hopefully you have had a chance to listen to our latest episode. Dr. Matt Whalin interviewed Dr. Adele Budiansky on her focus review article “Temporary Intraoperative Cerebral Blood Flow Reduction to Facilitate Neurovascular Procedures“ from October’s JNA.  I have had several of my trainees listen to this as it is a great review especially when your institution classically utilizes only one means to reduce cerebral circulation during complex procedures or emergency events.

Our Challenging Case team continues to produce interesting content for the SNACC newsletter.  In this newsletter Drs. Jamie Ueijma, Jacqueline Morano and Michelle Dickinson discuss the case of a Parkinson’s patient with a deep brain stimulator who presented for a spine surgery with the use of intraoperative neuromonitoring. Is intraoperative neuromonitoring allowed in a patient who has an intracranial neurologic stimulator? Would you proceed with this case? More patients are presenting for elective surgery with neurologic stimulators. What should we do as Anesthesiologists to assure our patients’ safety?
