One day before the official commencement of the SNACC annual meeting, a group of faculty, fellows, and residents met to learn and teach principles of neuroanesthesia. This was the inaugural ICPNT Masterclass. Conceived to advance the standards of neuroanesthesia education, the Masterclass brought together a diverse group of professionals from across the world to share their experiences and perspectives. This year, the masterclass addressed management of perioperative emergencies, regional anesthesia, giving feedback as a medical educator, intraoperative neuromonitoring and processed EEG. The class was doubly helpful thanks to both its formal and informal curricula.
First, it was helpful owing to the formal program and learning objectives. For just one example: at my own institution, I have had the fortunate opportunity to learn EEG basics alongside neurology residents. However, the focus of these EEG courses is on the diagnosis of epilepsy using a full EEG montage. The session on intraoperative processed EEG introduced me directly to anesthesia-relevant concepts that I was able to apply immediately, while also giving me a framework for future study.
Second, and perhaps more significantly, was the informal curriculum: cross-pollinating ideas and perspectives. As a trainee, it is sometimes difficult to sort out what are universally agreed-upon truths, versus institutional culture, versus attending preference. Through problem-based discussion with others from across the globe, I was able to clearly see which elements of management belonged to each category, and to grow my armamentarium with new approaches. Some new approaches evolved to become my new plan ‘A’ while others a new plan ‘D’ or ‘E’ to solve a difficult situation where the first attempts did not meet with success. It also expanded my horizons from a systems perspective, notably from the discussion of regional anesthesia techniques and how blocks are incorporated into the perioperative plan in various centers across the world.
A month later, I find myself referencing knowledge gained in the ICPNT Masterclass constantly, whether within my own approach, or in discussions with faculty and with residents. It is remarkable how much knowledge was gained and how much my practice was transformed in just a single day.
To my eyes, the world’s first ever ICPNT Masterclass was a resounding success. I am eager to see what is planned for next year’s session, and excited to attend again and further develop my knowledge, awareness, and perspective.
