CAS Update

The Neuroanesthesia Section of the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society had a dynamic and productive year, highlighted by our educational programming at the 2025 CAS Annual Meeting in St. John’s, Newfoundland and a well-attended national webinar series.

Annual Meeting Highlights included:

PBLD – “Help! I’ve Been Called to Radiology for an Acute Stroke”

We were honoured to host Dr. Bhiken Naik (University of Virginia), who delivered a practical and engaging session focused on acute stroke management in non-traditional settings like radiology. His structured, real-world approach struck a chord with attendees.

Anesthesia and the Vulnerable Brain

Our panel explored perioperative strategies for patients with recent stroke, traumatic brain injury, or increased risk for postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD). This session provided evidence-informed tools for improving care in these high-risk populations.

Care of the Parturient with a Neurosurgical Condition

In collaboration with the Section of Obstetric Anesthesia, this interactive, case-based session tackled the complexities of caring for pregnant patients with neurosurgical conditions. Real-world scenarios and rapid polling generated strong engagement and enthusiastic feedback.

Pain Management for Spine Surgery

This comprehensive session reviewed multimodal and regional analgesic strategies to help clinicians optimize perioperative pain management in spine surgery patients.

In addition to the Annual Meeting, our National Webinar Series continued to provide high-quality, accessible education to members across the country. This year’s topics included:

  • Sedation vs General Anesthesia for Endovascular Thrombectomy (EVT)
  • Propofol – More Than an Anesthetic!?
  • Post-Craniotomy Pain
  • Blood Transfusion Practices in Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Making TIVA/TCI Simple & Fun: One Model to Rule Them All – an in-depth look at the Eleveld model

Each webinar attracted over 100 participants, reflecting the appetite for these kinds of educational offerings nationally. Recordings of all sessions are available through the CAS for members who could not attend live.

We look forward to more engaging neuroanesthesia content at our next CAS meeting, taking place in Ottawa, Canada, June 5-7, 2026.
