In 2018 SNACC recognized the inaugural members of the Women in Neuroanesthesiology and Neuroscience Education and Research (WINNER) Academy.  Our four inaugural members are outstanding representatives of our WINNER program and for SNACC in general and we are honored to have them as members and former presidents of our society. 

Here are brief bibliographic summaries of our inaugural WINNER Academy mentors.

Karen B. Domino, MD, MPH – SNACC President 2004-2005

Karen B. Domino, MD, MPH is Professor and Vice Chair for Clinical Research in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Neurologic Surgery at the University of Washington, School of Medicine in Seattle. Dr. Domino completed medical school at the University of Michigan, resident/fellowship training at the University of Pennsylvania, a Master in Public Health in Health Services at the University of Washington and a health policy fellowship based at the National Academy of Medicine.  Dr. Domino is a Commissioner of the Washington State Medical Commission.

For over 15 years, Dr. Domino has been Director of the Anesthesia Closed Claims Project and Registries, funded by the quality component of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Anesthesia Quality Institute. This project investigates adverse outcomes of patients undergoing perioperative anesthetic care and acute/chronic pain management by analysis of closed files at national malpractice insurance organizations. The project established specialized patient registries to collect additional medical information concerning rare perioperative complications, including pediatric cardiac arrest, postoperative visual loss, postoperative respiratory arrest and awareness during anesthesia. This project has contributed to improvements in perioperative patient safety. In recognition of her research contributions to the specialty, Dr. Domino was selected as the 10th Annual John W. Severinghaus Lecturer in Translational Science in 2018. 

Monica S. Vavilala, MD

Monica S. Vavilala, MD – SNACC President 2010-2011

Dr. Vavilala is Professor and Vice-Chair of Strategic Affairs in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the University of Washington. Dr. Vavilala has appointments in Pediatrics, Neurological Surgery and Radiology. She directs the premier UW Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center whose mission is to reduce the injury burden across the lifespan through research, education, training and outreach. Dr. Vavilala is the only anesthesiologist in the country to direct an injury control center which has an 80 faculty membership. She has devoted the past 20 years of her professional career attempting to understand and improve clinical care and outcomes for TBI patients. Dr. Vavilala is a member of the working group and an author of the Brain Trauma Foundation adult and pediatric TBI Guidelines which recommend best practice in severe TBI. She serves on the NIH study section and holds leadership positions in professional societies. Dr. Vavilala has mentored over 30 fellows and faculty, most of whom are in academic medicine. She has launched a number of new programs at the UW, including the INSIGHT summer student program and the Injury and health equity in injury program. Dr. Vavilala is clinically active and is a practicing neuroanesthesiologist at Harborview Medical Center, the region's level 1 trauma center.

Kristin Engelhard, MD, PhD – SNACC President 2013-2014

Dr. Engelhard is Professor and Vice-Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany.  Dr. Engelhard has more than 80 peer-reviewed publications and her research focus is experimental and clinical neuroprotection and neurophysiologic monitoring.

Deborah J. Culley, MD
Deborah J. Culley, MD

Deborah J. Culley, MD – SNACC President 2014-2015

Dr. Culley is Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where she serves as Vice Chair of Research. Her research focuses on neurobehavioral changes related to anesthesia and the effect of cognitive impairment on outcomes in elderly surgical patients. Dr. Culley also serves as the Chair of the Academic Anesthesiology Committee of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and Secretary of the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Criteria for future WINNER Academy Members include:

  1. Women with a history of providing excellent mentorship
  2. Currently active in neuroscience research or education
  3. Be an active member of SNACC (ten or more years)
  4. Be willing to continue to provide mentorship to SNACC members and be actively involved in the WINNER program
  5. Be nominated by a current active SNACC member
