Program chair and President-Elect Dr. Rafi Avitsian coordinated an outstanding program for our 2017 Annual Meeting. Thank you to all who attended — we had a record number of participants!  Planning is already in progress for our SNACC 2018 program in San Francisco.

Highlights of the Program Included:

Thursday Colloquium

  • A Basic Science Symposium on fluid therapy for the neurosurgical patient with excellent discussions by Drs. Michael Souter, Fitz Roy Curry and Martin Smith.
  • An Ultrasound in OR and ICU Workshop organized by Drs. Esa, Anthony, Elsharkawy and Farag.
  • A SIM session at Boston Children’s Hospital with Drs. James, Maurtua, Moran and Sinz.
  • An excellent Clinical Symposium on neuromonitoring with Drs. Deiner, Hemmer, Koht and Palanca.
  • A Career Development Workshop moderated by Drs. Armstead and Paisansathan including a discussion on NIH funding by our outgoing president Dr. George Mashour.

The Thursday evening Dinner Symposium on Perioperative Monitoring of the Brain: Assessment of Consciousness and Improving Outcomes was well attended and included discussions of monitoring the anesthetized brain (Dr. James Sleigh), EEG, Consciousness and the Anesthetized Brain (Dr. George Mashour) and EEG Monitoring for Assessment of Consciousness in Comatose Patients (Dr. Jan Claassen). The talks were fascinating and the company excellent.  We thank Masimo for their generous support of this annual event.

Friday morning kicked off with an excellent Plenary Session by Dr. Ole Isacson, the Maurice Albin Keynote Lecture, on Neuroregeneration. The theme of this year’s meeting was “Brains and Machines” and our next session focused on this topic with great talks by Drs. Rezai, Ojemann and Chestek. Friends, if I may add a brief commentary, the future is here and I found it fascinating to listen to the work being done by these neuroscientists. After two excellent poster sessions with great discussion at each individual presentation, the afternoon session included a focused review of the Management of Patients on New and Old Oral Anticoagulant Therapy Presenting for Neurosurgery. We were honored to have experts, Drs. Carabini and Levy, present on this important and timely clinical topic.

The formal meeting ended with two excellent discussions. The first was a tantalizing preview by Dr. Mads Rasmussen of the GOLIATH trial evaluating outcomes for patients with acute ischemic stroke undergoing thrombolytic therapy under general anesthesia vs. conscious sedation. The day ended on a high note with outgoing JNA editor Dr. John Hartung gaving an insightful and frankly moving discussion of doing and evaluating neuroscience research.  Given his years of experience, Dr. Hartung’s thoughts and 30,000 foot approach held something for all SNACC attendees. A special shout-out to his excellent slides!

Other highlights:

  • Our congratulations to all of our five travel award winners!  Also this year SNACC sponsored ten young FAER scholars – these outstanding individuals are our future and we are proud to include them in our ranks.
  • The Michenfelder New Investigator Award this year went to Dr. Mengyuan Peng for her research on dexmedetomidine-induced neuroprotection.
  • The William L. Young awardee this year was Dr. Andrew Hudson for his work on burst suppression in the cortical microcircuit.
  • The Distinguished Service Award went to Dr. Elizabeth A. Frost for her outstanding service and contribution to SNACC.
  • The final event of SNACC 2017 was the William L. Young Dinner.  We have nearly reached 50% of our goal of $200,000 for this award given annually, and received over $5,000 in donations during SNACC 2017.  For those interested in donating please go here.
Past President Plaque
From left: Drs. Jeffrey Pasternak and George Mashour

Our outgoing President, Dr. George Mashour handed over the gavel to our new President, Dr. Jeffrey Pasternak. We will remember George’s term as President for many reasons, but most importantly for his emphasis on the “The Three Pillars” of neuroanesthesia/neuroscience. These include the clinical care of patients with neurologic disease, the foundational neuroscience of anesthesiology and the neurologic outcomes of patients undergoing non-neurologic procedures. We welcome Dr. Jeffrey Pasternak as our new President and look forward to his sage and organized leadership!

A huge thank you to Ruggles Service Corporation for again orchestrating an excellent meeting. Their understanding of and personal attention to our society is invaluable and a primary reason why SNACC continues to be a dynamic and progressive organization. SNACC 2018 will be in San Francisco on October 11-12, 2018. Plans are underway and information will be included in upcoming newsletters. Hope to see you there!
