We hope that all our members have had the opportunity to read SNACC’s submission to the ASA Monitor on Diversity and Inclusion. As an international organization we have a unique opportunity to engage and exchange ideas with a diverse contingent of individuals in anesthesiology, critical care, neuroscience, and beyond. This dynamic group includes men and women of different cultures, ethnicities, and religions; those espousing to different sexual orientations; the young trainee; and the junior and more experienced faculty. Together this heterogenous group offers SNACC a variety of different perspectives which ensures that our organization remains relevant and refreshingly innovative.  As our population grows and changes, this diversity and inclusion initiative is an opportunity to ensure that we as an organization continue to support all these voices in SNACC.

We look forward to hearing from all SNACC members in an upcoming survey.  We feel that the information gathered from this survey will help us understand some of the different perspectives of our SNACC members and help to direct the Diversity and Inclusion Committee’s agenda for the coming year. Some suggestions for consideration include:

  • A mentorship program to help guide and support junior faculty and trainees.  A diverse group of mentors in clinical work, research and leadership roles in SNACC will support this program while ensuring the success of all our mentees.
  • Diversity-driven activities like Global Health with a trainee focus.
  • Utilizing the SNACC Newsletter to highlight the experiences and backgrounds of our diverse group of scientists and clinicians.

These initiatives cannot be realized without the support of the SNACC membership.  We look forward to hearing from members interested in sharing their ideas and volunteering their time to develop this new SNACC initiative.  As we move forward into SNACC’s next 50 years, SNACC’s Diversity and Inclusion committee will position SNACC as a leader in ensuring a supportive and collaborative environment for all our clinicians and scientists today and tomorrow.

Those interested in sharing additional thoughts with this committee as well as actively participating in realizing this vision, please reach out to us at laglio@bwh.harvard.edu or marieang@mac.com.  We look forward to discussions about the Diversity and Inclusion mission and our agenda for the coming year during our upcoming SNACC Annual Meeting.
