FROM THE SNACC LEADERSHIP

SNACC Statement on Racism

Recent events of racism have impacted us profoundly. The shocking killing of Mr. George Floyd has left us sad, disappointed, frustrated, and angry. We are once again, reminded of the racial discrimination and social injustice that still exists around us. The covenant of a civil and just society is threatened when civil servants are the perpetrators of these violent acts. As physicians and scientists, it is our moral, social, ethical, and professional responsibility to stand against such injustice. Our hearts go out to the family of Mr. Floyd as well as many others who have been impacted by heinous acts of racism. The Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care (SNACC) strongly condemns all forms of discrimination including racism.

Discrimination and systemic racism are dangerous for all people including our patients, colleagues, and our organizations. We see the pain that many of our students, trainees, and colleagues experience routinely and we stand with them. Diversity and inclusivity are core values of SNACC and we strongly oppose any acts of racism, oppression, and prejudicial bias.  We acknowledge that we have much left to learn but remain committed to continuing to promote diversity, inclusivity, and equity within our organization. We promise to continue our efforts to educate one another and support those affected by racial and other injustices, as well as encourage our members to exercise their rights to express their opinions. We promise to explore methods for integrating social justice, and to especially focus on confronting systemic bias based on race, or any form of discrimination, into our organization.

Finally, we promise to continue to talk about the things that make us uncomfortable and to extend this conversation to all socially marginalized groups in SNACC.
