PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Welcome to the Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care (SNACC)!

Jeffrey J. Pasternak, MD
SNACC President

George Mashour, MD, PhD

Jeffrey J. Pasternak, MD

Established in 1973, SNACC has been the premier organization representing the perioperative neuroscience community worldwide. Although it has undergone multiple name changes over the years, the Society has been, is, and will continue to be a gathering place for pioneers who advance our understanding in basic neuroscience, applied neuroscience, clinical innovations, and medical education related to the care of neurologically at-risk patients. It is my honor and privilege to serve as SNACC’s 44th president, and in doing so, help manage ongoing SNACC activities and oversee the creation of new, innovative initiatives.

Gavel Transfer
Outgoing President Dr. George Mashour
passes the leadership gavel to our new President, Dr. Jeffrey Pasternak.

In the coming year, I plan to lead our Society in efforts to recruit, train, and support the next generation of perioperative neuroscientists, clinical innovators, and educators drawn to the SNACC mission. Examples include encouraging trainee involvement in Society activities, supporting the development of an international subspecialty training accreditation platform, and continuing the campaign for donations to the William L. Young Research Fund. I hope to see the Young Research Fund grow so that we can increase our support of research activities proposed by developing basic and clinical neuroscientists. I also plan to encourage the growth of foundational neuroscience concepts applied to anesthesiology and perioperative outcomes in diverse categories of patients (i.e., not just neurosurgical patients) who have neurologic diseases that could confound patient care (i.e., a goal that is consonant with SNACC's Past-President Dr. George Mashour’s “Three Pillars” concept).

As SNACC is truly an international society, I also plan to expand SNACC’s international footprint. Specifically, SNACC will seek to increasingly interdigitate with other international societies that share our mission and aspirations, so that we can mutually benefit from our interactions.

Finally, my colleagues at SNACC have always made me feel that SNACC is a welcoming home, for mature physicians and scientists, as well as for those in the developmental portions of their careers. I plan to work to enhance this aspect of our Society, so that we can have an even greater presence and more diverse membership in the upcoming years.

I look forward to an exciting and productive year, and I want to thank each of you for your ongoing support. Let’s work together to make perioperative neuroscience broader, larger, stronger, and better!
