At SNACC’s 44th Annual Meeting, Dr. Markus Luedi from Bern, Switzerland was awarded the 2016 John D. Michenfelder New Investigator Award. His discovery that a dexamethasone-regulated gene signature is prognostic for poor survival in glioblastoma patients was published in the Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology in January 2017.
Dr. Luedi and his group at the Bern University Hospital Inselspital did investigation on dexamethasone dependent induction of hallmarks of cancer in glioblastoma. Preliminary screens confirm increased cellular invasiveness, activation of angiogenesis and proliferation in an orthotopic xenograft model.
As first acknowledged by SNACC with the 2016 John D. Michenfelder New Investigator Award, these findings raise the possibility that dexamethasone may exacerbate glioblastoma. In May 2017, Dr. Luedi received the 2017 oncology grant of the Swiss-Canadian Mach-Gaensslen foundation for the project entitled “Dexamethasone-induced Hallmarks of Cancer in Glioblastoma”.
