Trainee Engagement Committee Update

Happy New Year! 2025 is going to already be a great and busy year for us. We continue to update our Neuroanesthesia Classroom. Our Advanced Classroom has been a great resource for our own trainees and we welcome you to share it with your trainees.  This in addition to our Basic Classroom, is a mostly free resource to help guide junior and senior residents through their Neurosurgical Anesthesia rotations.  It can be found within the Education Corner tab under Education and Trainees. We continue to thank Dr. Kamilla Esfahani (Director) and Dr. Rashid Hussain (Associate Director) for their work in this endeavor.

Our JNA podcast most recently reviewed the use of artificial intelligence in our field.  Dr. Shobana Rajan interviewed Dr. Samuel Blacker on his publication, “Utilizing Artificial Intelligence and Chat Generative Pretrained Transformer to Answer Questions About Clinical Scenarios in Neuroanesthesiology.” This conversation offers a look into an area that seems to be finding its way in to more and more aspects of our life.

Our Challenging Case team continues to produce publications in the SNACC newsletter.  If you have not already read our article in this triannual newsletter, take a look – it’s an absolutely fascinating case. Drs. Emmad Kabil, Kamilla Esfahani and Nadia Lunardi discuss a rare case of serotonin syndrome after administration of remifentanil.  This case is truly captivating, we cannot say that we would have recognized this rare case of serotonin syndrome.  In addition, with our regular use of remifentanil, this case is most certainly worth the read. Thank you, Dr. Kabil and team.

Finally, we continue to publish EEG signature cases.  Be on the lookout for Dr. Rashmi Vandse’s review of alternative locations to place sensors. Placing the sensor on the forehead, as recommended by manufacturers of depth of anesthesia (DOA) monitors, becomes impractical during certain cranial neurosurgical procedures when the sensors position overlaps with the surgical field. This challenge has prompted the exploration of alternative placement options; but what kind of readings are obtained? Dr. Vandse takes a look at these different approaches.
