Girija Prasad Rath, MD, DM
Editor-in-Chief, SNACC Newsletter

Fifty years back, in 1973, the Society of Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care (SNACC) was formed in the name of Neurosurgical Anesthesia Society (NAS) with John D. Mitchenfelder as its founder president. Since then, several SNACC leaders have contributed immensely to the growth of this society. Many of them are accomplished academicians, internationally-recognized anesthesiologists, and neuroscientists. Young and aspiring neuroanesthesiologists consider them as mentors and role models. “Rendezvous with Editor-in-Chief” is a new column introduced in this issue of the SNACC newsletter to recognize the contribution of such tall academic leaders. I am grateful to Prof Adrian Gelb, a clinical neuroscientist and President of the World Federation of Society of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA), for agreeing to be part of the first such column and share his points of view.

Unlike the dilemma of the previous year, the upcoming SNACC Annual Meeting, in a physical format, appears certain. We are excited to celebrate this 50th Anniversary meeting as an in-person meeting after a gap of three years. This issue has highlighted the preparedness for the meeting scheduled to be held during September 8-10, 2022, in Seattle, Washington.

‘Global News’ (previously, International News) is another attractive feature of the SNACC Newsletter in which the neuroanesthesia and neurocritical care activities around the world have been presented by academic leaders from the respective countries or regions. This issue featured the neurosciences affairs of Brunei, a tiny yet one of the richest countries of Asia. Also, in this section, Prof HH Dash, an Emeritus SNACC member, discusses the story behind the formation of the Asia Society for Neuroanesthesia and Critical Care (ASNACC). This section also describes the formation of a new neuroanesthesia Society, the ‘Malaysian Society of Neuroanaesthesiology and Neurocritical Care (MSNACC),’ and its national activities.

There is a lot more information inside, and is the first issue of newsletter publication with our new partner, IMI Association Executives. The new staff team has been introduced to the SNACC members in the member’s section. I thank the SNACC Communications Associate and Copy Editor, Melody Foote, and Lee Bryan Claassen, the Executive Director of IMI, for bringing out an excellent spring issue of the newsletter.

SNACC is very proud of the awards, achievements, and recognition of its members. Please share your accomplishments to be acknowledged in the ‘Members in News’ section of the newsletter.

I am thankful to the authors and newsletter staff who have contributed to this issue. And, I hope you enjoy reading the spring issue.
