Canadian Anesthesiologists Society (CAS) Neuroanesthesia Section Update

The Canadian Anesthesiologists Society Neuroanesthesia Section has a new Chair, Dr. Melinda Davis, from the University of Calgary. The Section would like to thank Dr. Tumul Chowdhury for his work as Chair and we look forward to benefitting from his expertise as he moves into the Past Chair role. The Executive Committee of the Section is rounded out by Vice Chair, Dr. Bryan Glezerson, Secretary Treasurer, Dr. Adele Budiansky, Member at Large. and Dr. Christian Lehmann.

The Neuroanesthesia Section has had a successful year of educational events. The Section once again hosted a National Rounds series over the course the academic year. These zoom events were well attended by anesthesiologists across the country and very well received. Topics included postoperative delerium, neurological monitoring in spine surgery, precision medicine in acute brain injury, and the physiology of emergence. In addition to their role in continuing medical education for practicing anesthesiologists, these sessions are also a valuable opportunity for our neuroanesthesia fellows to present at a national level.

The highlight of our educational programming each year is the Annual Meeting of the Canadian Anesthesiologists Society. The meeting, held this past June in Victoria, British Columbia, featured local and visiting speakers (including some familiar faces from SNACC) covering a range of topics in a variety of learning formats. The following sessions were held:

  • Brain Monitoring – Current Concepts And Modalities (Dr. Shobana Rajan, Dr. Bryan Glezerson, Dr. Deepak Sharma. Moderator Dr. Melinda Davis)
  • Current Concepts in the Perioperative and Critical Care Management of Traumatic Brain Injury (Dr. Deepak Sharma, Dr. Mika Hamilton, Dr. Kan Ma. Moderator Dr. Tumul Chowdhury)
  • Subarachnoid Hemorrhage-Updated Guidelines-2023 & Perioperative Challenges and Management of Patients with Spinal Cord Injuries Undergoing Non-Cardiac Surgery (Dr. Adele Budiansky, Dr. Wiliam Rieley, Moderator Dr. Bryan Glezerson)
  • PBLD: Code Brain: Perioperative Cardiac Arrest in Neurosurgical Patient. (Dr. Shobana Rajan)
  • PBLD:Perioperative Management of a Patient Undergoing Sat C Section with Ruptured MCA Aneurysm (Dr. Kan Ma)

The CAS Neuroanesthesia section is looking forward to ongoing collaboration with SNACC.
